Does anybody know how the numbering for the List Number Style in the Manual template that comes with
Word works? The style is numbered, but when you go to Style – Modify – Numbering the numbering is set to None. I’m more than a little stumped.
    Thanks
    Rose

Don’t use this template. Instead, use the one that you get downloading the Word version at:

I’m just curious to know how the numbering in that Manual template works. Anybody out there know? I’m stumped and i doubt I’m the only one. Also, there’s no doubt in my mind somebody will need me to fix some document based on it in the near future and I’d like to have some clue as to what I’m looking at!
        Thanks as always

      Hi Rose:

When I go to Style/Modify/Format/Numbering, the numbering is set to ListStyle, not None.

The style name is List Number, but when I go to Format/Style/Modify/Numbering the numbering is set to None. I’ll attatch an example of the style. I’ll try to attach.
        Thank

          Hi Rose:

Your List Numbering style is based on the List style which is based on the normal style. Numbering is not part of the style. You have added numbering through the Bullets & Numbering dialog box (the list templates).

If you go to Format/Style/Modify/format/numbering, there is no numbering because you have no numbering in the List Numbering style. It’s just as if you took the normal style & went to Bullets & Numbering & applied numbering. If you then went to the Format/Style/etc., you would see there is no numbering attached to the normal style. However, if you right click on the text in your document & choose Bullets & Numbering, you will see that one of the list templates is chosen. The same is true for your List Numbering style.

The only thing that puzzles me right now is that if you add numbering manually to the normal style & go to the Format/Style/etc., it will not show up in the description of the style. However, with your List Numbering style, it does show up in the explanation in the Format/Style box. But if you press Shift+F1 & click the text, it shows as direct formatting, not part of the style.

          Hope this helps.

            Thanks Phil,
This style still has me a bit puzzled. For one how can it be possible to attach direct numbering to the style, not have the numbering appear in the style formatting dialog when you go to Format/Style/Modify/Numbering, but still have the numbering apply each time you apply the style? I have been unable to reproduce this behavior. Also, when you break the list using this style by hitting enter after the last list item, and then apply the style later in the document, the list numbering restarts at 1 automatically. I can’t reproduce that behavior either, but I’d certainly like to.
Any ideas as to how this thing was set up are appreciated!
            Thanks for the help

              Hi Rose:

If it’s any consolation, I’m confused too. In some ways, your List Number style acts like it’s part of the style; it’s listed in the style box as a numbered style. When it’s applied, it immediately applies a number, just as if it were part of the style.

In every other way, the numbering appears to be direct formatting. The numbering part of the style is listed as direct formatting by checking two different ways. Click inside the paragraph, press Shift+F1, & the cursor adds a question mark to itself. Click the paragraph & the description says numbering is direct formatting. Also, as you’ve noted, checking the style under Format/Style/Modify doesn’t show any numbering.

Furthermore, suppose you remove the numbering from a paragraph & with the cursor still in the List Number paragraph, click in the style box. Now press enter. A dialog box appears asking you if you want to reapply the style or update the style. Choose update. Although your List Number style is now defined without numbering, NONE of the other List Number paragraphs lose their formatting. If the numbering were part of the style, they should change. The reason they don’t is because the numbering is direct formatting.

I’ve always avoided Word’s numbering because I always reach an impasse. Ah well, maybe someone else can take up the gauntlet.
