In an auto-numbered list, when I insert a new paragraph, Word sets the new paragraph and the one above it to a different and “wrong” para. format style (the indents for the left side of the first line is messed up and hanging gets turned on). How can I prevent this from happening each time?

    Thanks!

Don’t use the “numbering” formatting button or Format/Bullets & Numbers. These apply direct formatting to the paragraphs & you will find they are unreliable. There are numerous posts in the Lounge regarding problems with numbering.

The best solution is to create styles & then apply the numbering to those styles. See post 76976 by Gary Frieder on how to create numbered styles. You should do this after visiting the Bullets & Numbering dialog box & going through all the List Templates (the 7 numbering styles on each of the 3 tabs) and resetting them back to their defaults.

      Hope this helps.

I also turn OFF the AutoFormat as you type feature, in particular the option Format beginning of list item like the one before it . You’ll find these in Tools menu, AutoCorrect towards the bottom under Automatically as you type. See attached screenshot.

I prefer to apply MY styles and formatting rather than relying on Microsoft’s choice. I guess I’m a control freak.
