      Me too. Downloading, that is.

Always create a fresh drive image before making system changes/Windows updates; you may need to start over!
We all have our own reasons for doing the things that we do with our systems; we don't need anyone's approval, and we don't all have to do the same things.
We were all once "Average Users".

      Yay! 🙂

… but still no update as yet on Download Windows 10 Technical Preview ISO. 🙁

    • #1495844

I’m pretty sure they won’t release it in ISO format until it hits the slow ring.

I’m up and running. The Start Menu is a little different, but I haven’t done much of anything so far. Had a power bump earlier, but my UPS handled that OK. IE is 11.0.8. More when I find out more, but I’m not doing much with 10 yet, still running it on VM.

      Total nightmare here.

      Audio borked and won’t update
      Start menu borked
      Search borked

Pretty certain I’ll be rolling this back when I go to bed!

        Total nightmare here.

Looking for an appropriate emoticon… there doesn’t appear to be one for OUCH! (eek! …shades of E.T. [for those old enough to remember the scene in THE film]) so this will have to do: :o:

My in-place update is only up to 10% and taking forever… I could be joining you soon… 🙁

    • #1495856

It took the best part of 2 hours to do the upgrade but I don’t have a particularly powerful PC.

The good news is it took less than 10 minutes to rollback to 9926!

    • #1495872

Doing great on 10041. Not a hiccup. Now, tomorrow, I have another three to do. Nice process this was.

All sounds are ok here. New Recycle Bin icon !

      All best wishes. Jean.

    • #1495873

Mmm… the handholding process as the update progresses/updates (“Taking care of a few things”, “Almost ready”, “Let’s start”) is, IMHO, really touchy/feely… and I like it. 🙂

      (I’m just an ex-social worker… :))

Edit – Inline update completed with no discernible problems.

      Edit – Hmm… no sound device detected. That’s a real backwards step….

I un-installed the previously-detected “Audio device on High Definition Audio Bus” then re-scanned for hardware changes to no avail.

Well, they did say there would be more bugs on fast track releases. Although I haven’t experienced any sound issues, I have seen others reported elsewhere. Try installing a Windows 8 driver. Report the issue to Microsoft via the Feedback App.

      Jerry

    • #1495997

I did both of them Jerry.

I did find a workaround for the sound issue so tried a clean install of 10041 today but the sound works in this install! There were a couple of other issues in the clean install in that the Mail, calendar & people apps wouldn’t work but the fix for that is well documented. Also, the search facility only sprung into life after a couple of reboots.

Cortana is still not working in the UK but MS are aware of this.

Browni, thanks. I used your link to go finally, to enabled and then 1800 to have the audio driver and it WORKED ! This was tedious but with my hardhead, I got to it. Some of the offered options had been changed but I did weed them out and got the proper one. Now, I have my sound back. I voted you a Thankyou. All best wishes. Jean.

I’ve fixed the sound issue (with a Win 7 driver).

I didn’t notice in 9926 but can now see ‘Assets’ and ‘Staged Assets’ folders in File Explorer’s ‘Frequent folders’ list. Given the length of the filepath it looks like MS have overcome the previous limit of filepath length.

I can also see in the ‘Frequent files’ list a number of files stored on a local network server that I’ve never opened on the Win 10 laptop. Very strange…

Edit – access to network resources is blinding fast, even over wireless. Very impressed!

Edit – Windows Defender started scanning a Win 7 box on my network (and flagging some of the Nirsoft utilities on it as ‘hacktools’ :))

Quick update on the sound issue in build 10041.

I was still getting the repeated failed install of a Realtek HD driver in Windows update so I applied the workaround from post #12, restarted and ran Windows update again, this time the driver finally installed and a new icon popped up in the system tray.

You’re welcome Jean, glad it worked for you.

      • #1496196

        Hello Browni.

My last machine ( out of 4 ) to get 10041 is getting it now as I type at you. This D/L has now included the drivers for Realtek audio. Might MS have lit on to this missing driver ? I will let you know how it fares when done. there is always a surprise laying behind any rock in one’s path. Be good. Jean.

    • #1496117

Did my Desktop today and doing my Notebook now. Had to reset the Desktop screen resolution back to 1440×900 from the maximum but otherwise haven’t seen a problem yet. Both are Win10-only installs.

Before you wonder "Am I doing things right," ask "Am I doing the right things?"
    • #1496197

Indeed there can be many surprises in one’s path Jean!

I’ve just noticed that Windows Update on my PC is installing a Realtek driver :o:

      • #1496206

        Browni, hi ! again.
And my already updated Toshiba is now getting an update to the Realtek drivers. It does not even use it !
As far as I can tell, it is using a Microsoft driver, no mention at all of Realtek in System -> Audio. Maybe it will use it after the D/L ???
My Lenovo shows that there is no Realtek option in use. Strange. Be good. Jean.

    • #1496199

Update to my #17, the Toshiba Notebook install failed overnight but after restarting took only a couple of hours to finish. Everything looks fine in Device Manager and no error about the PCI Simple Communication device.

I should mention both machines are over 4 years old so age alone isn’t necessarily prohibitive. The Desktop came with Vista more than 4 years ago and the Notebook came with Win7 and I did clean installs on both .

Before you wonder "Am I doing things right," ask "Am I doing the right things?"
    • #1496218

Update to post #19, just had it confirmed on the Insider forum that another Realtek driver was released today to fix another problem. Phew!

Jean, it probably installed Microsoft drivers by default and is now downloading the Realtek drivers which do a lot more. My screenshot in post #14 demonstrates this.

      • #1496229

        Browni, right you are.
But getting it running was a run-around. I had it in a folder, courtesy of 10041, named Realtek. I clicked on all the .exe and none would run. I finally did a “let MS find it” sort of procedure and it did install it after I clicked on “look on my machine to find it”. The important thingee is that it runs.
My four machines are now done. I also have two W-7 Thinkpads that will get to 10 when it goes RTM.
        Be good. Jean.

      • #1496304

Realtek has been “fixed” but the other three sound cards have not.

Via, Conextant, Creative. They missed being included in WU by one day according inside sources @MS

You can get the ISO here
