FYI: There are reports that Windows 10 1903 shows suddenly generic USB media icons. I’ve investigated it a bit and can confirm it – it’s a bug. A description may be found at Windows 10 V1903 shows suddenly generic USB drive icons. Just in case someone stumbled uppon this behavior.

I’ve escalated it in this MS answers forum thread to Microsoft’s forum moderators and asked to forward it to the developers.

Let’s see if they acknowledge it. MS seems to be having a hard time acknowledging bugs these days…

Currently I receive feedback from my German blog readers reporting the issue also for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 and for older Windows 10 builds. It seems, that the icon is destroyed by an online service for updating device icons and apps – but I wasn’t able, to fix it on my test machines.

I’ve submitted a Feedback Hub item for this, just in case that does any good (unlikely).

      Ohh you mean like this????

On Win 10 1903×64 18362.418 went like this nearly a week ago, last week updated to 18362.418 and still no change.
In this case I use a modified or old (Win8.1) imageres.dll (in WINSXS and Win32 folders) as I particularly loathe those flat “Washed out” looking Default items that come with Win 10. Used the imagres.dll for quite a few years now, and just figured it was a “Feature” but I guess now its a Bug??

This is what I have on 1809 Pro with Oct. updates :
Drive E is a USB-stick, Drive G is an external USB HD.

      replying to gborn:
I too am seeing generic icons on all three of my Windows 7 x64 sp1 machines since the most recent cumulative update (two are Win7 Home and one is Win7 Pro); and my Windows 10 version 1903 laptop also shows generic icons along with metadata staging errors in the event viewer. The generic icons are all for external usb mass storage, such as usb thumb drives. But curiously, the icon on my HP-Envy model 700-214 desktop pc has also changed from the icon for a desktop pc to a new icon for a notebook computer, which looks like a laptop in the icon. These are all on the Devices and Printers page from the Control Panel. The HP-Envy has a DVD combo drive and is definitely not a notebook pc.
