My system:
i7-4810MQ
Intel HD Graphics 4600 20.19.15.4531
Windows 10 Home 64 bit v. 1903 with all October updates

If I select
view in File Explorer, the descender of characters is cut off.
This occurs to g j p q and y.
But AFAIK it occurs only in the
view.

To demonstrate I created a “@descender” folder containing file names with the affected letters and took screenshots of
and [Details] views.

Correct [Details] view:

Buggy
view:

Has anybody else noticed this?
Or is it a quirk of my particular machine?

1 Desktop Win 11
1 Laptop Win 10
Both tweaked to look, behave and feel like Windows 95

Laptop or desktop? If desktop, what monitor? Are you running at the default/recommended resolution for the monitor?

Have you changes any of the system fonts?

Joep517 asked and I answered:

Laptop or desktop?   Portable Clevo P17SM-A HD screen 17.3″, 1920 x 1080.

+  External LG HD IPS screen 27″, 1920 x 1080.

Are you running at the default/recommended resolution for the monitor?  Yes. Both screens.

Have you changed any of the system fonts?  No. Besides, all views use the same font.

The phenomenon occurs on either screen.

Have you checked whether your computer behaves the same?
