You might want to try this freebie Font Thing, it lets you look at installed and un-installed TrueTypeFonts.

Web Attack has a nice group of freebie font tools as well – at least one of which provides a browse capability similar to what PSP has for graphics. Specifically, Font Selector & Font glancer seem to offer what you’re looking for.

Fonter is old, but free – and works with Win 2000 (no idea about XP).
It used to be shareware, and cost a bit to register, but since they no longer support it they’ve put the full registered version on their website for download (they also have other programs they did the same thing with) – all useful, if in a limited sense depending on your needs.
It lets you view all the fonts installed in Windows; the default view is all alpha (upper and lower case and numeric characters, or you can formulate your own text message to replace it; you can change the font size and print reports to compare specific fonts that you can’t quite decide between. I first downloaded it before Compuserve had a GUI interface (yes, that old) and I just installed it again at work – all the newer font viewers I tried just couldn’t compare to its full feature set.
Don’t be deceived when you go to their website (http://www.osomin.com) – they’re into minerals and related software, but the link to their shareware collection is down in the lower right. It’s definitely worth the trip!

You might want to look at X-fonter (now version 3.6) from Blacksun software. It’s free and can be found at http://www.users.pandora.be/eclypse%5B/url%5D (Sorry I am not sure how to make this a hot link). A slightly different approach, also free, is found in akFontviewer at http://www.aksoft.net/progs/akfontviewer. Hope this helps.
