I had to recently bare metal install W10 (64 Bit, Pro) because the system was failing to boot properly. The best, and easiest method, was to format the drive and start from scratch. Not a big deal as Windows boot and programs are on an SSD, data files located on a different disk drive. No need to restore data files, just install programs as needed.

After the install I noticed the my Brother HL-3170CDW (a color laser) was printing very slowly with almost anything. Visio printing was painfully slow. The printer would cycle up and then take minutes to do the actual printing. I removed the printer (and drivers) and let Windows reinstall the printer. That did not fix the problem.

I then went to the Brother site and downloaded the drivers from their site. The drivers had been last updated February of 2014 so quite old. I downloaded the drivers, removed the printer from Windows and let the drivers install. No issues during the install. The drivers did ask what type of connection (Ethernet in my situation).

The printer now prints as it should. Printing is much faster. Problem solved.

Lesson learned it is worth getting drivers from the vendor even if the drivers are old. I suspect that Windows did not know how to properly communicate over Ethernet even though Windows detected the printer.

The June Win10 patches caused printer problems for some printers. MS reissued the Cumulative Updates on 6/16 supposedly to fix the problem, but they are download from the MS Update Catalog only.

One of the workarounds was to reinstall the drivers, which you did.
