This is my first post so I apologize in advance. I’m trying to update my mothers computer. Last installed updates were on 9/2017. KB4034664,KB4014504. Before that was 12/16 all under Microsoft. No major fails, ran disc checks with no issues. I checked for updates and started to backtrack but was unsure if that was the best way. I did read a few posts but every situation was a little different. All tracking updates have been blocked or uninstalled. the following updates have not been downloaded or installed. The easiest way would be ok as she’s not to hands on. KB4490628,4516655,4474419,3133977 or pciclearstalecache. I have them saved on my desktop. I did hide a few updates and re-ran an update check but again I wasn’t sure of my course of action. I know the holidays is a hard time to ask but I only have a short time here. I attached the installed updates and the check results

My moms computer is a Dell Studio XPS 7100 Win 7 Home Premium SP1 64bit version 6.1.7601.17514.

I’d be grateful for any help
    J

There are two threads with step by step procedures that cover this.

Follow these procedures from the start. If you have already done a step, skip to the next. The updating points (patches) were chosen for a specific reason at points that MS had solved problems that caused trouble.

If you have specific questions or otherwise need help, come back here and post. One of us will answer your questions.

Starting from your first link at your August 21st post at step one. Most of step 1-2 are done but I’ll double check just to make sure. I ran the up date twice and hid some updates. Should I start with a fresh unbidden scan? Kb3133977 is not installed. Should I add that to the others on my desktop? If so what’s the order to install the updates on my desktop? I’ve done all the scans suggested no problems. Since windows updates without failing to install do I need to reset windows update? Like I mentioned I had most of the step completed but I’ll go over them just to make sure.

Get your settings right, uninstall\hide the tlelmetry. Chkdsk, and sfc just check the integrity of the file system, are just CYA. No need to go through the cleaning of the datastore unless you have other problems.

You will need KB3133977, KB4474419 (Sept date=latest), KB4490628, and KB4516655 in that order for using Windows Update. Install the first two, reboot, wait after login until the install completes. The two SSUs have to be installed exclusively, so install one, reboot even if it doesn’t ask, wait till the install finishes, then install the other and reboot. Leave the pciclearstalecache alone, it’s there if you encounter network problems but probably not necessary.

Hide the Rollups back to where you stopped updating then install all the old patches. Watch out for the telemetry and nag patches. Then, start installing the Rollups according to the points in the procedure. Those points are chosen b/c MS fixed some problems. You should probably end up with the Nov 2019 patches at the end. Watch for the SSUs in between before you unhide the next batch of Rollups (KB4516655 is not the latest) b/c they won’t show up in the queue until it’s empty and they have to be installed by themselves.

Any questions, I’ll be around until evening (server time).

Thanks again, I’ll work on it first thing tomorrow morning. I have her set up with Google Chrome as her default is that a problem when running the updates or does windows automatically use IE. Also do I need  Aida32 or Belarc as a tool? if so which one do you suggest.

I’ll post my progress tomorrow afternoon. I read through all the posts and it seems straight forward.

You should be using Windows Update. The browser you use doesn’t come into play.
When you get completely through, you can check if you are missing anything with Belarc. It will probably tell you you are missing Dec updates, as Woody hasn’t cleared them for installing yet (DEFCON-2 still).

Thanks for the fast reply. I may not be able to start until The 22nd. But I’ll give it a shot and respond with status.

I might find useful to use Belarc Advisor, a free software utility that finds all missing updates in your computer.
