The default location your browser specifies for downloaded material can vary, unless you changed the default location.

Check out your browser Options to determine where it directs downloads, which will also reveal where you can change the default.

The following three browsers use the same default folder location:

For Vista and Windows 7:

The default location for Firefox isC:Users(user-name)Downloads folder.

The default location for IE9 is C:Users(user-name)Downloads folder.

The default location for Chrome is C:Users(user-name)Downloads folder.

In Windows XP:

C:Documents and SettingsMy DocumentsDownloads

Other browsers may or may not use the same default location.

Strangely enough I don’t have a MyDocs download folder on this laptop.

I guess the security gurus at dhs don’t want us downloading stuff, so I’ll try later when I get home.

I haven’t successfully ‘joined’ (I tried) and accordingly couldn’t download, but something you should be aware of if you really want to push it to the limit (in ‘old hardware’) is a ‘lightweight’ Ubuntu variant called Lubuntu, which was at version 10.10 when my source was published (Linux Format, March 2011).

In a nutshell, it takes 1GB of RAM to run Ubuntu, and 128MB to run Lubuntu. It won’t run big stuff like OpenOffice, but it will run lighter alternatives ‘such as AbiWord and Gnumeric.

Another ‘Linux for ancient PCs’ from the same source is Puppy Linux, which is described as ‘arguably the best mini distro available’.

I haven’t tried either (in fact I haven’t tried any flavour of Linux itself yet), but am passing this along for your interest.
