I have been asked to find out how to break a link in word. The gentleman that I am trying to help has some word documents that were originally linked to other documents that are now, no longer available. How do I break that link? Is there a way to do it so all of the links are broken and it no longer prompts you when opening the document?

I’m afraid I’ve never set up a link so please break it down slowly for me.

      Select Edit | Links…
You’ll see a list of links in the document.
You can select individual ones: click the first one you want to select, then Ctrl+click subsequent ones.
Or you can select them all: click the first one, then Shift+click the last one.
Click the Break button to break the selected links. You’ll be asked to confirm your choice.

Thank you Hans. He’s concerned that when he emails the document to others, they will have trouble opening it. They shouldn’t receive any kind of prompts once the links have been deleted, correct?

If he breaks ALL links, there will be no prompts to update links anymore when the document is opened.
