BootVis Alternative?

BootVis used to perform a useful job of analysing the boot process on Windows XP, showing graphically what was loaded when and indicating where problems might be occurring and with what application loads. That was before SP2, however. Whenever I try to run it now, it builds the analysis file but, when I try to open it to read the results, I get the message “Number of Physical drives in the trace file is 0. Trace file has invalid system configuration information”. Digging around on Google suggests this is because BootVis is not compatible with SP2, (which may be one of the reasons Microsoft removed it as a download).

There are several applications out there that let you analyse what runs at boot time, (I use AutoRuns from SysInternals, which gives way more information than MSConfig). However, I haven’t yet found an application that will analyse the timing and order of the boot process in the way that BootVis did. Can anyone suggest an alternative??

Microsoft appears to have pulled BootVis at least 18 months ago, like they did with RegCleaner 4.1a, presumably for the reasons you describe, that their software updates made the tool too difficult to ‘fix’.

Sadly I don’t know of anything equivalent.

In another thread… I am interested in finding a program that will let me set the startup order and timing. I believe someone recommended one, but I never downloaded the trial to see what it could do. (The problem computer is turning 3 years old this month, so it probably needs a complete rebuild rather than some tweaking around the edges…)
