Boot up shows black screen (no splash screen just black)
Fan runs, power light on, hearย  W7 boot up sound.

Pressed power button to shut down.
Pressed power button again to boot up.
    Boots up normally.

    First time this ever happened.
Although it has seemed that the splash screen has taken a little longer to appear
at boot up for the last week or so .
What would be causing the black screen?
Is there a location in the event viewer to understand what caused the black screen?

I’m afraid the screen will not come on ifย  shut off the computer.
    HP laptop
    Windows 7 Home Premium
    SP1
    64 bit

    Any help appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Sparky

Occasionally happens to me on an old Dell XPS15 L502X which went through major changes over time.
      All tests are passing.

I consider that there are 2 possible causes:

      1. BIOS timing issues due to major changes when compared to the original state. Windows 10 instead of Windows 7, 16 GB RAM and not Dell branded, but higher quality nevertheless (Crucial/Micron), 500 GB SSD, different Wi-Fi card (Dell branded). Due to the age of the laptop, there is no BIOS update or support for Windows 10
      2. Hard-disk issues which cannot be identified by any of the major tests or SMART monitoring

Your issue is unlikely to be related to the Operating System and its version as such, but only in context with the other variables of which I listed few above

        Thanks for the possible solutions.
A little more info on computer.
Bought the HP laptop January 2011.
GPU DE-solder itself from motherboard Feb 2013.
        Bought a refurbished motherboard.
It now boots up with a Compaq (Q) splash screen rather than a HP.
I didn’t want to send it back to have the BIOS re-flashed so I just lived with it.
I don’t think the above caused the the black screen issue.
I’m still using the original hard-disc, testing says its OK
I’m thinking I should replace the hard-disc before it fails.
Event viewer showed no problems during the boot up time period.

        Thanks Again,
        Sparky

You see, many changes in your case too.
However, the only dangerous possibility associated with loss of data of all those presented above is a potential hard-disk failure.
Try to run diagnostics tools and read the SMART information before attempting to replace the hard-disk.
