I have a new laptop and I have asked for help @ mfr’s website w/o a response so perhaps someone here could point me in the right direction as to where to look to solve this issue. I am able to sign-in and the laptop boots up. Then a message that says “lock” or “locked”appears and disappears almost as quickly so that the word could barely be read. The laptop shuts down. I reboot and message is no longer there and the machine works fine for as long as I need to use it. I looked in Power Mgt and could find nothing; ran sfc /scannow with no corruption. I have setup Defender, Malwarebytes and SAS. I have updated the video driver. Is there another place for me to look to see what’s causing this behavior. It would seem Startup might be a place to look, but I’m not sure what to look for. BTW, Windows 10, 21H2.Thanks.

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody LoungerMarch 14, 2022 at 3:24 pm #2431609Do you leave anything plugged into the laptop when it’s off?
Some recent models enable the laptop to share power with peripherals – so you can charge your phone off the laptop, even if the laptop isn’t charging itself, or switched even switched on. I’ve had suspicions some older kit acts like a phone charging, thus basically draining the laptop battery by staying powered, but inactive.
The problem arises as the battery is initially to low for Windows to be able to switch off before the battery runs down below its minimum capacity, so Windows takes the safer route of turning the machine off while it has power (so is “safe”) in the hope you’ll leave the machine off long enough to charge the battery above the minimum battery level Windows needs to shut down should the power disappear unexpectedly (at which point it’s safe again, as it can cope should the power be removed).
The “locked” message would be as the default requires a password on resume so must lock… Maybe if you turn that off you’ll have proved that’s the problem if the machine logs straight in rather than requesting a password when it powers up second time..

AskWoody LoungerMarch 16, 2022 at 12:21 am #2431951You can setup a Windows “Boot” log, and then check and see what the log says:

AskWoody PlusMarch 16, 2022 at 6:23 am #2431979Thank you for that suggestion. The log is a great idea. I haven’t had to use the laptop yet so it will be a few days before trying these suggestions.
I forgot to mention in my original post that I was using the power adaptor, not the battery. I also forgot to check event viewer which might not be a help if there was something in the settings that told Windows to behave like this.
