Bookmark cross-reference not linking on click

I recently converted to Word 2007 and have used cross-references to bookmarks extensively in Word 2003. I have a document in which the cross-references produce a strange pop-up message when clicked on, instead of hyperlinking to the bookmark. The pop-up includes a warning that opening some files may be dangerous, and asks if I want to open the file that I am currently already working in. When I click OK in the pop-up, nothing happens.

I have determined that the problem only occurs when the document is checked out from SharePoint. If I leave SharePoint out of the loop, or if I open the document from SharePoint as Read-Only, the bookmark cross-references work fine. Are there any SharePoint/Word 2007 users out there who are having the same problem, or know a solution/workaround? I have tried substituting hyperlinks for the bookmark cross-refernces and the same bogus pop-up error occurs.
