We were getting regular BSOD crashes from TCPIP.SYS (more than one a day).
After googling for the crash message ( IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL ) I found threads that seemed to pin the blame on a problem with Zone Alarm and Vista.

Uninstalling Zone Alarm has certainly made the system more stable (no BSODs since then) but I am now relying on Windows Firewall.

This post is intended to document the problem here (for posterity) and also to ask if anyone has found a way to get ZA (my favourite FW) working satisfactorily with Vista. I’m not really that interested if you’ve NEVER had a problem, but if you have found a way of preventing the BSODs I would certainly be keen to know more.

Oh yeah, I’m afraid you’ll find lots of “jaw flapping” about alleged problems with Zone Alarm and Vista, including my own! I have given up on ZA on both my Vista and XP setups and switched to the free Comodo™ Firewall Software. I did this some time ago and haven’t had any problems with Comodo so far. If you’ll search The Lounge you’ll find others too.

Been following your vista exploits Al and likewise I’ve given up on Zone Alarm (free) and just been using the Windows firewall on both machines XP and Vista. Its time to try something better and Comodo looks the biz… can you confirm that the “free” is free as their site says or do you get hit with a time limit after 3 months? I understand the Pro version is a paid for…with the extra benefits included.

Well, I don’t really know YET, Jeff since I’ve only switched to Comodo about TWO months ago. But if you read the blurbs on the Comodo site about why they do it, including comments from the boss-man, it’s because they make their money in other ways. If push DOES come to shove, I suppose we could be looking again, but so far, so good. I’d recommend giving it a try. And here I must admit that I haven’t read the details about their paid version, but I think it’s an AV product AND a firewall. Don’t quote me on that however.

I am using ZA free version 7.1.254.000 and never had a problem since updating to that version, on my Vista HP SP1 machine.

We are still using the free versions of ZA on both XP and Vista with NO problems.
