Apple Weighs Letting Users Switch Default iPhone Apps to Rivals

The technology giant is discussing whether to let users choose third-party web browser and mail applications as their default options on Apple’s mobile devices, replacing the company’s Safari browser and Mail app, according to people familiar with the matter. .

The web browser and mail are two of the most-used apps on the iPhone and iPad. To date, rival browsers like Google Chrome and Firefox and mail apps like Gmail and Microsoft Outlook have lacked the status of Apple’s products. For instance, if a user clicks a web link sent to them on an iPhone, it will automatically open in Safari. I hope this happens, as at times I’d like to use Brave or Outlook as defaults on some iOS devices.

I don’t need this feature. If I want mail I fire up gmail. If I want a browser I fire up Safari, Chrome…

The main area I’d find this feature to be useful on is when tapping links to open a web browser or email, being able to have those default to another browser or client (such as Brave and Outlook) would be nice. In the meantime, iOS 13, has made the share sheets easier to get to, so now it’s at least a little less painful to open links in non-default apps. 🙂
