Back in November; in anticipation of the pending change in administrations in the White House, the incoming president’s threat of imposing tariffs on imported goods, and the end of life for Windows 10; we were considering accelerating our move to Windows 11.

Then we noticed that HP was having a Black Friday Sale and made the decision to purchase the new workstation sooner than later.

We went ahead and purchased a customized HP Z2 G9 Tower Workstations (SKU: 4N3U9AV_MB) for $1,513.68.

The machine was configured as follows:

    • HP Z2 Tower G9 Workstation – 450 W,
    • Windows 11 Pro,
    • Intel Core i7-14700 Processor vPro Enterprise (2.1 GHz, up to 5.4 GHz w/Boost, 33 MB cache, 20 core, 65W) + Intel UHD Graphics 770,
    • 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR5-4800 UDIMM Memory,
    • NVIDIA T400 (4 GB GDDR6, 3 x Mini DisplayPort) Graphics,
    • 256 GB PCIe 4×4 2280 Value M.2 SSD,
    • Intel Wi-Fi 7 BE200 + Bluetooth 5.4 (no-vPro),
    • 5mm SuperMulti DVDRW Optical Disc Drive,
    • Type-C USB 3.1 Gen 2 Port v2,
    • HP 125 Black Wired Keyboard, and
    • HP Wired 320M Mouse.

Now, with Black Friday behind us, an identical Z2 G9 Tower Workstations can be purchased from HP for $1,282.00 or $231.68 less than what we spent back November.

We also discovered during the configuration process that it is less expensive to purchase additional RAM and SSD storage from a third-party vs what HP was going to charge.

Bottom line – Fool Me Once, Shame on You; Fool Me Twice, Shame on Me.

Take your time when purchasing and configuring computers on the HP website.

Also check whether those “sale discounts” are really discounts.

I nearly bought a laptop the other day for $1500. 2 days later it was listed at $2400. The initial price seems to have been a typo!

      cheers, Paul

I too ordered a new Win 11 PC from HP directly on Cyber Monday. Two reasons: my 1o year old Dell DT PC Win 10 was NOT eligible for the Win 11 upgrade, and to buy before any potential tariffs might take effect. However after reading all summer long about Ask Woody’s admonitions about Intel 13th and 14th generation processors, I chose to order with an AMD processor. Now, I have not been back on HP’s website to compare Cyber Monday price to today price, I am content having purchased three previous laptops from HP and been completely satisfied with them. Only time will tell whether or not the new Win 11 PC will last as long as the previous Dell. At least now my new one is mostly solid state except for the cooling fans. My bigger complaint is and has always been with Microsoft, and how they force you to do things their way or no way.
