Is it possible for malware to infect your BIOS? If it is, what steps would I need to take?

Yes it is. UEFI is also vulnerable. To prevent such infections, Trend Micro advises users to enable the UEFI SecureFlash option, to set up a BIOS/UEFI password and to update the firmware to its latest version so that it has the latest security patches. UEFI/BIOS updates are usually distributed by computer manufacturers through their support websites and some of them do fix issues identified by security researchers.

Thanks for the info. I’ll have to search for my firmware updates.

Has anyone here actually seen a BIOS infection in the wild?

      cheers, Paul

Just because you don't know where you are going doesn't mean any road will get you there.

I can’t say that I have, but I have noticed that after wiping the hard drive, then re-flashing the BIOS to the latest version, that all problems were solved once I got a clean OS back on the hard drive. Now, I can’t say you can always do this easily – because some BIOS have a protection that will not allow you to flash any but a newer version once they are programed. Go figure – because that doesn’t seem to stop the malware coders! :o:

I have seen a BIOS infection but that was many years ago.
