I am making a black and white bar chart with 5 categories. I’m using black, white, or gray patterns to identify the bars over time. The bars are fine, but the legend boxes are too small to be able to distinguish the patterns. I can make the font bigger, but the text gets bigger and looks weird. Is there any way just to make the boxes in the legend bigger?

I tried to find easily distinguisable patterns, but can’t find 5 different ones. You have to look really carefully to figure things out. I’ve attached a sample.

The width and height of the legend key boxes is read-only. I’d use solid patterns of varying darkness from black to white, or else narrow horizontal, vertical and diagonal stripes.

Thank you. I’ll try that. I also forgot to ask about the initial group of categories. The first couple of categories don’t show up on the chart. 1990 has Chemical and Climate chopped off.

Double-click the category (X) axis, or select this axis and then select Format | Selected Axis from the menu.
Tick the check box labeled ‘Value (Y) axis crosses between categories’.
          Click OK.
You should now see all categories.
