I’m having off and on issues launching apps on my iMac Pro running Big Sur. I either get this error when launching apps using the Dock or Launchpad (the “You Do Not Have Permission to Open This App”): https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/666611

Or if I launch the app using LaunchBar, LaunchBar freezes, then the app crashes entirely.

I’m not having this issue on my High Sierra iMac, so it seems to be Big Sur related.

Anyone else having this issue? Reinstalling the apps haven’t resolved the issue, and it’s any random apps anytime.

    Thanks!

Nathan, I don’t know which applications you are having problems with. I am still using Mojave 10.14.6 with the latest patches installed and am not having problems launching the applications I use frequently. Everything I have been doing, so far, has worked normally here.

I thank you for letting us know about the problems you find using BigSur. I am going to wait until late April, at a minimum, before moving on to BigSur. And even beyond that, if necessary, until at least two months have gone by without reports of some serious trouble using it. I understand that the second minor version update of BigSur is already undergoing tests, even if it is not being released yet to the public.

I would like to know which AV works well with BigSur, in case Webroot doesn’t, or else just can’t keep up with today’s worsening malware situation.

I’d definitely wait on Big Sur. Right now it’s been living up to its initials the more I use it.

May be related. There was an issue with ‘Developer ID Notary Service – Resolved Outage’

Probably so as that is the service that causes it. I believe my Internet has been funky as well, which certainly doesn’t help.

Apple should move the notary service device-side. Put it in a secured local database that gets updated like XProtect does. Then if there’s an Internet or server issue, it still works.

      Nathan,

I am still running Mojave, because I was not encouraged by reports of how Catalina has tended to cause problems; I did upgrade recently from Mojave to Catalina a government Mac I have for telecommuting, and experienced no problems so far. But I use very few applications there, besides Outlook for email, Teams for meetings and the line-command “Terminal” application for pretty much everything else, so this might be a reason why everything now seems to be OK with Catalina there.

In my home Mac I am also still running Mojave and have, so far, skipped Catalina for the reasons mentioned above. Now I am wondering about the following:

Is it OK to jump directly from Mojave to BigSur, come August or September, when I think the latter has been around already long enough without new serious issues being reported, or is there an important reason why I really should upgrade to Catalina before moving on to Big Sur?

Once you’re ready to go, you should be able to successfully go from Catalina to Big Sur.

Thanks, Nathan. My question is whether I can go from Mojave, where I am right now, directly to BigSur, or whether I must first upgrade to Catalina, for some reason. I really, really, really don’t want to upgrade to Catalina, unless it is absolutely necessary to properly upgrade to BigSur. So do I have to upgrade from Mojave to Catalina at all, before installing BigSur?
