I’ve really messed up. I have used MSN Stock Quote add-in from Microsoft for many years. It has never been updated, but it still was working with my 2007 Excel. For a couple of days, the MSN server wasn’t working. It’s happened before, but I got impatient and started looking around for something else to use. I found Etikr and installed it. I didn’t work as well, but more importantly I would have had to redo all my spreadsheets.

MSN’s server is back up and running. I uninstalled ETIKR, but now MSN Stock Quote add-in won’t work. It works on my laptop with the same 2007 set-up. So I suspect that Etikr may have changed some settings that I can’t find even though I’ve uninstalled it. I’ve also uninstalled and reinstalled MSN StockQuote several times, rebooted etc…

When I went to Add-ins I found the two MSN MoneyCentral Stock Quotes Add-ins in the disabled items. I enabled them, but only the refresh icon and the cancel refresh icon show up. When I reinstall, I get the message “Failed to download settings from the internet.” It seems that something is blocking a connection to the internet. It’s not a local security issue because the add-in works on other computers on our network.

I have e-mailed Etikr to see if they have any idea if there is a registry entry or something else blocking the MSN stock quote. They haven’t replied. If anyone here has a good idea about what to search for and change, I’d would greatly appreciate the help!

I could compare things to my laptop, but I’m not sure where to start.

      Cathy,

If you take regular image backups of your PC then now would be a good time to take a quick copy of your data and then restore the most recent backup.

If System Restore is enabled you could try using this to revert system settings to a time before the installation.

I do System restore regularly at home. However, our system administrators have disabled it at work. I’m not sure what the reasoning is. It’s bailed me out several times in the past.

How do you do image back-ups? Obviously that won’t work now since I haven’t done them. Sounds like something I should do!

You need special software to create an image back-up to another hard disk. Two such programs are regularly mentioned in our Computer Security and Backup forum: Acronis TrueImage and StorageCraft ShadowProtect.

I don’t know what sort of company you work for, if this happened to my work PC then I would copy all the data and the IT department would “reimage” the PC to put it back to a known good state. I would then put my data back and reinstall any programs that I was responsible for.

Not much help I’m afraid, so I hope some other lounger is familiar with these software products and can help you.

You use a third party product such as TrueImage or Shadow Protect.
If you search our Computer Security and Backup form for these terms you will find lots of posts.

Thanks. That’s a good idea. They can reimage for me. My data is all backed-up, so they can get that set up also. Of course, it won’t
