Reminder: End of servicing for Windows 10 version 21H2 (Editions: Home, Pro, Pro Education and Pro for Workstations)

On June 13, 2023, Home, Pro, Pro Education and Pro for Workstations editions of Windows 10, version 21H2 will reach end of servicing. The upcoming June 2023 security update, to be released on June 13, 2023, will be the last update available for this version. After this date, devices running this version will no longer receive monthly security and preview updates containing protections from the latest security threats.

To help keep you protected and productive, Windows Update will automatically initiate a feature update for Windows 10 consumer devices and non-managed business devices that are at, or within several months of reaching end of servicing. This keeps your device supported and receiving monthly updates that are critical to security and ecosystem health. For these devices, you will be able to choose a convenient time for your device to restart and complete the update…

Could be a push to 11, but could just as well be a push to Win 10, 22H2.
Always worth being at least a little paranoid when dealing with Windows updates.

      Not necessarily to Windows 11.

And remember — all you need is registry keys/incontrol tool/group policy and it’s a piece of cake to control this.

…To help keep you protected and productive, Windows Update will automatically initiate a feature update for Windows 10 consumer devices and non-managed business devices…

The phrase feature update means an update from Windows 10 21H1 to Windows 10 22H2, NOT an upgrade to Windows 11 from Windows 10.

Because of that, you may wish to change the wording of this thread’s subject line if it’s still possible. If no longer possible because of the editing window for your post having passed, perhaps you can ask a Manager to change it for you.

I am sure Microsoft will push to Windows 11 for compatible PCs.
None-compatible may get updated to 22H2.

..As always, we recommend that you update your devices to the latest version of Windows 10, or upgrade eligible devices to Windows 11…

As we all know, updates are not the same as upgrades.

The Microsoft document does not give me any reason to believe that a Windows 10 21H2 system will be upgraded to Windows 11 instead of being updated to Windows 10 22H2 as a consequence of approaching or reaching the 21H2 End Of Servicing date.

I don’t share Alex5723’s certainty that MS will bypass 22H2 but caution dictates that a deliberate and timely update to 22H2 should be performed.

Make your backup and forget it. My worry bin is full.

My worry bin is empty since switching to Linux Mint. Apologies, I couldn’t resist. 😀

On a serious note regarding the thread topic, I think Microsoft has truly gone to the dark side with the whole “Windows as a service” and simply act like Darth Vader: “I am altering the deal, pray I don’t alter it any further.”. So you never know what to expect from them as they can and will probably change anything at anytime without respect for the end user or even IT departments. I still get to experience it and see it first hand at work with Windows 10 and Office 365. Despite best efforts by the IT department to control some things, they are still ultimately at the mercy of Microsoft. But that’s the game one must play now if you need/want to continue to use their software/systems.
