I had to stop using one drive as I got fed up with the app hijacking certain folders on my PC. I could not find a way to avoid this happening, and gave up.

      This is really annoying 😑

Microsoft is very pushy about getting people to put content on OneDrive but it is possible to keep content local or, as I do, have a mixed environment of both a local and OneDrive Documents folder.

      Peter –

OneDrive is a “mess.”  Forget the file sharing.

Microsoft backup just decided to help by coping desktop, pictures and documents to the cloud — and removing those files from the local machine.  Didn’t delete them, but removed them from nightly NAS backup.  And created a situation where, if restore was needed, it would become more complicated and very very slow.  That first “upload” to the cloud, which we didn’t request, took five days.  Yes, five days.

Microsoft tech support has been unable to explain the settings adequately, claiming only that the program (Windows/Microsoft Backup) is new and still in beta.  OK, then why create problems for users before you even detail the settings???  BTW, there seem to be “sliders” (aka radio buttons) to choose Desktop, Documents, Downloads, etc. but they do NOT stop the upload of filed to the cloud.

Another undocumented “bud.” Setting files or folders to “leave on local machine” does NOT restore files that are already in the cloud (even if not originally requested).  The User needs to copy them back.  In short, this new “help” is not ready for prime time!!!

Peter, you’ve done a great job, my IMHO, have only touched the “tip of the iceberg.”  Please keep digging around Microsoft’s new Windows Backup/One Cloud mess.  Thank you!!!

Microsoft Backup in Windows uses OneDrive but is separate from other uses of OneDrive.

It certainly should not delete locally stored files.

Thanks for the kind words.  The article was specifically about OneDrive sharing not the many other ‘tips’ of the OneDrive ‘berg.

Whenever I share a OneDrive file, the default is to allow editing, whereas 99% of the time I only want to give permission to view (which requires a few extra clicks).  Is there any way to reverse this default behaviour?  Online searches turn up a lot of “no way to change it, but it’s a stupid choice by Microsoft!”

Each gmail address gets 15GB of free storage.

As an Android phone (Pixel) user, I can save something to Drive and then directly share it to someone via Gmail or Android messaging.
