None ! of the ‘free’ VPN is good! You pay with your privacy, with your data and metadata.

Correct, and a very good info site.
Also at the end, concerning Privacy and Trust:
Keep it simple by choosing for a Swiss or (2nd) Norwegian jurisdiction, that keeps the Database in the EU !

(and best of all: Do not click everything is keeping you safer too)

Why do you need a VPN?
Do you work on your PC at “open” wifi (coffee shops etc)?

      cheers, Paul

In my opinion, everyone that uses public Wi-Fi should be using a trustworthy VPN. But other than that, do you really NEED a VPN?

I subscribed to a VPN a few years ago just to prevent my ISP from collecting my internet usage data and selling it to 3rd parties.

But after a while I grew weary of the IP addresses that the VPN provided to me sometimes ended up on block lists, and I was unable to connect to certain websites using them. Then it was a game of trying to find a VPN server in a different city or region with a different IP address range. Or even easier, just drop the VPN connection so that I could sign into a website.

I’m done with VPN, except when I travel with my laptop.

For reference, the top 2 VPN’s reviewed here appear to be trustworthy, and especially affordable with the 2 year plans (billed annually, $3.29 and $2.30 month, respectively): https://restoreprivacy.com/vpn/best/

There is no such thing as “best” when it comes to free vpn.

The best vpn is something you pay for.  If it’s free, YOU are the product and especially as I see all the time on this site, you get handed spammy IP addresses and it’s not protecting you one bit.

Ok but what is the ‘best’ ‘safest’ most secure VPN ?  It’s sooo difficult & confusing!  I am not technically savvy enough to figure it out.  I read through some of the defensive computing article, but most of it is over my head (this is not a negative comment on the writer, it’s my level of knowledge).

        https://defensivecomputingchecklist.com/vpn.php

I read Consumer Reports VPNs, which I thought was very good but as Michael Horowitz points out, most are judging VPNs by the wrong criteria (according to him, but I agree).

I am currently using NORD but I know they have issues and now with recent Surf Shark merger…..??

Do I really need a VPN? I think certainly on public Wifi, which I try to avoid. At friends and family ??? I have found that many of my friends and family are completely clueless about security and I think their WIFI could be at risk due to that lack of understanding and oversight. But at home, is it necessary?

And if so, what is the ‘best’ VPN? I am always in favor of increased security –  I don’t know if I am achieving it by using Nord or any other VPN, given how difficult it is to choose one that isn’t compromising my security in their own ways. I was thinking: Mullvad, PIA, IPVPN, Mozilla, ProtonMail?  Any others? thanks

I haven’t looked into this for some years. I purchased an IVPN account years ago and still use it occasionally. Have been pleased with performance. I’m not hiding state secrets or anything so I mainly needed speed. I use it for testing websites from different locations and if I need to change my IP to get into one of my servers because I goofed up something and the firewall blocked me 🙂

If one want protection at open WIFI hot spots set up your router to be a VPN end point. There are many that can do this. Just remember to leave your router on.

Just because you don't know where you are going doesn't mean any road will get you there.

The restoreprivacy link that I posted on July 11, a few replies above in this thread, seems to be a credible VPN review site. They rank VPN’s by the most important factors, detailed at their site.

By the way, their #1 ranked VPN, NordVPN, is the one that you are currently using…

The restoreprivacy link that I posted on July 11, a few replies above in this thread, seems to be a credible VPN review site.

But like all VPN review sites, they earn commission via affiliate links for some or all of the VPN services they review “independently”:

If you purchase a router on Amazon or a VPN subscription through a link on this site, we may earn a small commission at no additional cost to you.

Correct. But in all fairness, they do disclose that fact.

And as noted above, we also refuse to have any kind of sponsorships or paid content of any kind.

This restricts the ability of the website to make money. In order to continue operating the site and covering all costs and time involved, RestorePrivacy has a select few affiliates that align with our mission. If you purchase a router on Amazon or a VPN subscription through a link on this site, we may earn a small commission at no additional cost to you. As a general rule, we refuse to work with companies that have bad track records and/or dishonest practices.

Aside from hosting and other fixed costs of running a website, an enormous amount of time is invested in researching, writing, and testing various privacy and security tools.

Well that’s encouraging!!! : ) it is hard to get truthful, accurate reviews – and often I don’t do enough footwork when I am researching things. It’s easy to get incorrect, inaccurate or just plain wrong information.  But I also think it can be difficult and time-consuming. That’s one reason I appreciate all the accurate, truthful and good information I get here.
