I use the BCC field to send a memo regularly to a large group. there are two problems i’ve noticed with the setup of the BCC field that I wonder if they may be customizable. when a msg is undeliverable a note is sent to my inbox telling me who had the problem and what that problem was. Except for msgs where I have used the BCC field rather than the TO field, the resulting error msg is empty, and i therefore cannot resend the msg or check what was wrong. Basically i cannot tell who the problem is with or why. can this be changed? Also… can the inbox/sent views be customized to show the BCC field as well as the TO field?

Any help is much appreciated. thanks.

If you create your message using your own form, yes, it can have all the fields you like wherever it moves in your Personal Folders. (I don’t know about Exchange server-based folders.) I say this based on Outlook 2000, but I think OL97 had this capability as well.

I just realized you were talking about the tabular views and not an individual message. What I do is right-click a column heading, pick Field chooser, change the category to All Mail Fields, and drag BCC to an appropriate location among the column headings. Useful for Sent Items, but not Inbox. BCC should never be visible on messages in the Inbox. (Note: I use Outlook 2000 and may be forgetting things about Outlook 97.)

It depends also on where your message went and how the message comes back.

Most IPs will return the message as an attachment (and you cannot see the BCC in its headers) but will tell you as part of their error message which address failed.
I tried atest and couldn’t get to BCC in the returned mail – but did see the errored address in the return message from my ISP.

I’m assuming therefore that your problem is with an internal network or ISP that is simply not reporting the error correctly.

One (messy) workaround may be to turn read-receipts on and see who doesn’t respond. bummer

we use microsoft mail in our office. we are like a satellite office and are connected via a WAN to another office that used exchange server. Whether that matters, I’m uncertain. However, whenever there is an error in delivery of an email or a fax (microsoft fax) I get an automatic msg From: System Administrator, Subject: Undeliverable:(name of original subject), the body of the msg says: The following recipients could not be reached and it normally gives a list of the email addresses or fax numbers or the alias’ they use and a reason. There is a button to Resend this msg and when I click it the, a new window pane opens with the names in the Resend To: field and there is the text of the original msg. When i have sent the original msg using the BCC field. the resulting error msg from the System Administrator is blank. For some reason it is programmed to report only the recipients in the TO: field and doesn’t state the problem with delivery. So when i therefore hit resend msg… there are no names posted in the Resend BCC: field and i have know way of knowing who didn’t get the msg or the reason why. Quite Annoying! So I’m wondering if either the system administrator msg could be changed to read BCC field or if there is somewhere else to “look” and find the errors… Thank you both for the feedback.
