Battery Charging Question

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium on a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop. The battery icon shows the following statement – “38% available – (plugged in, not charging)”. I turned the system off and left it plugged in but it did not charge the battery to a higher percentage. How do I get the battery to charge up to 100%?

Your battery might be defective, or maybe the charging brick.

If it is not defective, sometimes removing the battery and putting it back in will help. Try it to see if the battery will then charge to 100%.

How old is the battery? It is possible that the battery will no longer charge to 100%. If the PC is relatively new, I would check with Dell.

Sometimes completely discharging the battery resets everything associated with charging & discharging.

This memory effect for batteries was a problem with old style NiCd batteries. Newer Lithium Ion batteries do not have this problem. In fact deep discharging can have detrimental effect on some batteries. It actually kills weaker cells more rapidly so voltage in the cells drops quicker than adjacent stronger cells. A Google search for battery memoryyields numerous results explaining this phenomena.

In BIOS, you may should a utility that lets you recalibrate the battery. You need to select the option, let the laptop completely run flat and then plug it back in and fully recharge it. This resets the calibration. If it still gets stuck, it is probably the battery is dying.
