Is there anyone out there who would be willing to look at the base table structure for a database I am creating and tell me if I am on the right track? I am very inexperienced in Access, and this is one of my first databases. I understand that if I don’t set my tables up properly, then the whole thing will be a mess to fix later. It’s not big… I only have 5 tables, and no data yet.

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody LoungerAugust 9, 2001 at 11:09 pm #536838Here is the file. My boss gave me the directions that we are setting up a check out system for checking out ID badges for people to access a secure area in our company. He gave me the information he wanted to have included, and I used that to create the table fields. My concern is whether I have normalized the tables properly and set up relationships. Data entry will be done on a form.

I looked at your db and would suggest the following:
tbl_Company Info
Change the field Company Name to text instead of autonumber. You can add a field called something like “CompanyID” as an autonumber to handle the names as they grow.
I would make the change to the field in tbl_Personal Info and make it text.
tbl_Personal Info would only need one field for company name — probably just “Company Name ” and not “Company #”.
It seems to me it may be of some use to relate the tbl_Log to the tbl_TagInfo to indicate who gave out the tag. Adding UserID to the tbl_Tag Info would help.(And relating it to tbl_Log).Hope this helps.

AskWoody LoungerAugust 17, 2001 at 4:19 pm #537936Ok. I made the changes suggested. I have done something wrong, though, because I can’t data enter a new record in the Key Log table. Something about the joins being wrong. I zipped it and attached it. Would someone please look at this and give me an idea as to what I’ve done wrong. I create a form and can’t enter the key number. So, I checked the table properties, and they look fine to me. The message, though, whether I enter info into the form or table, says something about the join being wrong.
