I now have an Access database in front of me. I don’t know much about Access. There is a form. There is a field called permit #. The system forces me to put data in the field but sometimes I don’t want data in that field (what it to remain blank). How do I change the field properties so I don’t always have to put data in that field (if I choose not to).

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 19, 2002 at 12:58 am #617968When I try to enter a ticket for a vehicle that is not registered, we get an error message and the system won’t except the record.
It works great if the violators car is registered with us, but many of our tickets are for unregistered vehicles. I tried to remove the links but then it seemed to import registration information into the violation table. Hope this helps. Bottom line, if a person gets a ticket and doesn’t have a permit# and error occurs (The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot find a record in the table ‘Driver Information’ with key matching field(s) ‘Violation Information_License#’). This error message shows when enter infromation in the Notiice of Violation form. -

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 19, 2002 at 2:50 am #617984Do you have permission to modify the table design? It’s not a good idea to do it if you don’t understand all the ramifications. Rather than changing the design, think about adding a record to your permits table with something like “unregistered” as the permit #. Then instead of leaving the field blank for unregistered vehicles, enter them as unregistered. This is far safer and more durable than what you are proposing to do.

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 18, 2002 at 3:31 pm #617826That field is probably the key and the table design requires a value in this field to create a new record. I would not recommend changing the field properties on that field. A key is an integral part of a database design and there could potentially be many other relationships and objects that depend on it. Maybe you could explain why you want it to be blank so that we could help you find another method to accomplish what you are trying to do.

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 18, 2002 at 4:19 pm #617838This system track parking violations. It is at a school. If you have a car at the school, you get a permit #. So when I fill out the form I enter the car permit number in the form. But we also give out tickets to people who are not on campus. Thus they don’t have a permit # to enter in the formj.
