Somehow an incomplete shortcut is sitting on my desktop. The icon looks like Control Panel. It has no title. Right-click says only “Create Shortcut”. On left click, an information dialog box says “Windows could not create the shortcut. Check to see if the disk is full.” A crossed-thru circle shows when I try to drag it anywhere, like the trashcan or another folder. Explorer says it’s a System Folder. Norton Systemworks 2002 does not detect it as a problem.

Any ideas as to how I can delete this puppy?

You haven’t, perchance, been playing around with TweakUI or something along those lines have you? You can create icons on the desktop that are actually special system folders, such as the control panel.

What happens when you double-click/open the icon? Anything show up?

You might also try opening Windows explorer and selecting your desktop in the left pane, and then see what appears on the right. it’s helpful if you have the “details” turned on in Explorer so that you can see everything.

Perchance I have. After a few retweaks (X-Setup), problem solved. Thanks. Ross

          Hi Ross
You’ve found out easily (some may say ‘got off lightly’) the down-side of a tweaker as powerful as XTQ. It is available on my web site, with a flashing red lamp – which tells users to apply extreme care.

Make no mistake, it is highly useful (for e.g. removing 3rd party customizations of IE) but you can come a cropper. When I first used it, I kept finding my RClick Menu got several multiple entries of the same things (e.g. Encryption and zipping) which made it about two-foot long. No amount of Registry hacking would cure it (nor uninstalling XTQ). I still don’t know where XTQ put these extras.

TweakUI is a much more friendly affair…

            MerC:

You can right click the plug-in title in the left pane, and select Edit from the context menu.

This will let you read the full rules for the plug in and trace down “funny” results.
