Amazon’s killing a feature that lets you download and backup Kindle books

Starting on February 26th, 2025, Amazon is removing a feature from its website allowing you to download purchased books to a computer and then copy them manually to a Kindle over USB.

Secret trick to downloading Kindle books in bulk – before it’s too late

Downloading your Kindle books one by one could take days. But with this clever step-by-step hack, you can grab 25 at a time and save your entire collection before Amazon locks it down this week.

Looks like Amazon may already have removed the download feature ahead of schedule. I spent too much time this afternoon trying to get “Download & transfer via USB” to work and failed. I went back to The Verge article and started going through the comments. The very first one (sorted by ‘Newest’):

I just chatted with a customer service representative after I couldn’t get the “Download & transfer via USB” option to work (Sunday, 2/23 at 8:45pm EST), and they confirmed the feature has been discontinued early.

Representative: “I’ve checked and I want to inform that Amazon will discounting support downloading via USB or to my computer.”
Me: “Yes, that starts on the 26th. Which is why I want to create my backup now.”
      […]
Me: “It should not be disabled for several more days. Are you saying they disabled the feature early?”

      Representative: “Yes”
