What is the best way to back up messages – a friend has saved numerous jokes in a folder entitled JOKES. He would like to back them up to a CD – R.

What would you want to open the saved messages? You can save an entire folder cereated in OE, but only as .dbx file which can only be opened with OE. This will be stored in the OE Store Folder as JOKES.DBX. If you save this file to a cd-rom, it can be imported into OE; but I don’t know of any other software that could view it.

Otherwise, the only thing I could think of would be to copy and paste all jokes into a more easily accessible format. Could be very time consuming, though. Saving the .dbx file is simplest and any windoze PC usually has OE. Can advise as to how to save/import this file.

Please do advise how to save and import the folder. Thanks

Saving is basically about knowing where the file is. Tools>Options>Maintenance>Store Folder should show you where OE is currently saving everything. Note the location. The jokes folder should appear in this folder as jokes.dbx. Save this to your cd-rom. You might take this opportunity to move the Store Folder (see previous posts).

To Import: select version of OE you saved from (with disc in drive) – File>Import>Messages>OE v.x. You should be asked to confirm location of files to import. Browse to saved file on cd-rom and select. If you want to share the jokes with friends, you could put the instructions on a readme file on the cd-rom.

Is there not a problem with reading mail from a CD?
I recall previous posts where backups from CD’s had been copied back to the HD but could not be accessed because they retained the read-only attribute from the CD.

True, it would be read-only. Hadn’t though about that being a problem If you right-click the saved file and choose ‘properties’, unchecking the read-only box should do the trick. Certainly works for saved Word and Excel files.
