This has me stumped. Had a blue screen over the weekend on my laptop running XP SP3. It stopped displaying my background jpg. I’ve run sfc /scannow and let it repair, I’ve gone into the registry and fixed the Active Desktop keys, and yet whenever I choose a different background image in Desktop Properties (bmp or jpg) it will change it in the little monitor picture there, but not on the actual desktop.

    Anyone have any ideas?

Any details on the BSOD error?

      Error code 10000050, parameter1 f55bec00, parameter2 00000000, parameter3 bd67873c, parameter4 00000001.

Lmimirr.dll is the top dll listed in bluescreenview. Now that I think about it, I was connected to the machine via LogMeIn that weekend. I’ll try uninstalling that and see if it helps. Thanks for the memory prod Clint. 🙂

If you have a System Restore point prior to the incident, try that.

Well uninstalled LogMeIn, didn’t fix it. Fooling around I got an image to show but not in an ideal way. If I go to Web tab under Desktop Items in Customize desktop and set that to any image, I get my desktop image to show (even though it’s a different image). I then have a moveable window that shows the picture I chose under Web, which I can drag until it’s almost off the screen.

Jerry, nope, no system restore unfortunately. Had turned it off to reclaim some disk space before I got a new HD and forgot to turn it back on 🙁

Web tab is probably not a good workaround I’m guessing. Have you tried any third party program that can set the background from any image (like FastStone Image viewer or any of dozens more) to see if that also fails to set?

Have you tried to set a background image from a program like Irfanview instead of the XP desktop interface?
Try setting an image unrelated to that of Windows XP supplied background jpg or bmp.

Tried using Irfanview to set it, still the same problem. 🙁

Oops, sorry; I forgot this was an XP issue.

      (Win 7 info deleted.)

The registry entry to check in XP to see if alternate background display is restricted.
