I work in a school and a student has gotten around the security system and inserted an obscene picture and cursor that appears just before the login screen appears. Fortunately it goes away after that. How do I get rid of it? I can’t figure out where it is stored in the system.

Do you have active desktop enabled? It sounds like the student changed the background to a bitmap, but Active Desktop overwrites it with a JPG. OR
The student changed the background to a JPG, but Active Desktop isn’t enabled with the default profile, so your regular BMP ‘covers’ it up.

Try changing Active Desktop briefly to see if the background changes. You could also try looking for a file called Internet Explorer Wallpaper.

I’ve also experienced this, although not from malicious intent. Change the background wallpaper to NONE and power off. when you reboot the system, change the wallpaper to what you DO want, power down and reboot again. See if it’s gone then. Seems that Win98 “remembers” the previous wallpaper until you make a change (or two) and the undesired one goes away.

In the future, you might wish to consider using POLEDIT to lock the system down. Would suggest reading the ENTIRE article in order to prevent someone from getting around it; particularly the FIND in the start menu, and the location of the installed POLEDIT file. It is somewhat tricky to do it correctly, but it can be done. You might also check and make sure that there is a BIOS password set so persons cannot get into the BIOS settings…i.e..you can disable the floppy drive through the BIOS and set the BIOS password so that only you can get into it to re-enable the floppy drive.
