For anyone setting up a new back up. The Western Digital “My Book” seems really slick. The feature I really like is, it comes with its own software already installed. Set it up and automatically it runs in the background. I bought the 1TB size to match with the new Dell (Win 7) and am impressed that I don’t have to do anything.

Hello.. As i use Acronis true image home v 7046 i am not at all familiar with “MyBook” as a back up strategy. Could you provide more information as to what this software actually does? Ex: With Acronis you can do a Full image or an incremental. or now a “continuous backup” You can mount the image (to give a look see) to make sure all is well, and the image process actually worked . With Acronis you also can do a recovery at boot time (in case things really “go south”) Some of the “free” backup software, do some or all of these things (depending on which one we are talking about) … Most that i have seen fall somewhere in between, and can give you a false sense of security…. one more thing you should actually test your “backup software ” before the time that you really need it, as you might be sorely disappointed at the results. If you can, post back with your results… as I’m sure there are many of us interested in a (free) reliable backup strategy.

As you are not familiar with the WD; conversantly, I have no knowledge about the Acronis.
For someone of your experience, you might find better answers than I can give by going to the WD website. Look for “My Book”, pick out a model, look for the pdf file for operating instructions and see what they offer. I know it is an automatic and continuous back up. I can go into the unit to view what has been backed up (and change it should I wish).
I don’t think I said it was free, did I? I purchased the one I use.
As with any opinion, there are often more than one side and not every one will agree.

Sorry for the confusion (my ignorance of My Book) I thought that WD “my book” was a HD with (free) imaging software package along with it. As WD had once offered Acronis software (free) as part of one of there “Hard Drive” packages. However i think that you should be sure as to what is actually being “backed up” is it just your files or is it the entire OS. As this would be extremely important if you needed to recover your system ( i have “hosed my OS so many time that i can’t remember the actual number) With Acronis i can “go back ” days , weeks, or months , and even years if necessary. As i have scores of backups. Most all stored on a separate internal and an external hard drives. Regards Fred
From the initial post it sounds as though kibtzz is talking about continuous back ups of files rather than an entire disk image. I had a lot of trouble seeing the image (I could not) on the WD Ext HD. If you can not see the image what good is it!!! Once I switched to the Seagate Ext HD I could see the image whether I created it with Win 7 or Acronis. I just like the feature set better with Acronis. Win 7 backup was somewhat basic for my use.

I know that on one of the “free” backup programs that i have tried, Paragon for example (don’t remember which version maybe 9.5) you were not able to “mount ” the image… so i agree, what good is it? I also tried the recovery and it worked, but still would not be comfortable not knowing… (by actually looking at the image ) I’m afraid that when some hear “backup” they automatically assume that it is an “image of there entire “OS”. This will lead to disappointing results at the worst possible time. So the bottom line in imaging is ….. be sure of whats being “imaged” and then the most important…. “pull the trigger” and try it out. Regards Fred
The WD my book software is not imaging software. It is a system that backs up files. It looks to me a lot like the Vista backup where you tell it which file types you want it to back up. It then searches the computer you are pointing it at and pulls in all the files of that type.

Hello and thank you for the clarification. As we all benefit from the input, as it is impossible (for me) to keep abreast of all this “stuff”. I personally view “imaging” (full OS backup) the single most important software to have. Thanks again Regards Fred
