Back button problems (IE Version 6.0)

The back button in IE has recently become more of a problem…sometimes it takes two “hits” of the button to make the page go back and most times, the IE icon spins and the result is I am on the same page I started with. The only way around this is to go to View, Go To, and choose the page I want to go back to. This is just an annoying way to suft the net. Has anyone else had and rectified this problem or is this an annoyance I have to live with?

Does this happen with all web pages or with specific ones? Some web developers reprogram the back button on their site so that it just reloads the current page (very annoying, in my opinion). Also, if a page contains ads, the back button may not function the way you would expect and want.

This is from the Windows Xp Expert Zone. Don’t know if it will work but try it?

Clear out the Temporary Internet Files. IE> Tools> Internet Options>
General> Delete files (and delete offline content.) It’s often recommended
that the TIF folder be kept at about 50-60 MB (Settings.)

Internet Options> Security> Internet Zone> Custom> Userdata persistence>
Enable.

Internet Options> Advanced> uncheck “Do not save encrypted pages to disk”

Internet Options> Privacy… are you allowing cookies?

Try disabling (briefly, as a test) any ad-blocking or privacy programs that
are running.

This was also an intermittent problem in IE 5, Do you have IE 6 and all the updates?

Thanks All. I can’t say for sure which web sites are the culprit as I’m all over the net all the time. Hans, I believe you are correct about some web designers; I’ve often thought that on some sites it is a built in feature that you can’t easily leave their page.

Bob, I’ll try the suggestion you posted. I believe I have all the updates – SP2 – unless one came out that I don’t know about.

I believe that what you are describing is due to the ads on the page. Clicking the back button will take you back to the same page before the ad loaded. If more than one ad, you have to click the back button to correspond to the number of ads. There are also sites that have an auto-redirect “feature” that will kick you back to the site if you click the back button. I use the dropdown arrow next to the back button rather than the View>Go To method to select the page I want to return to or to get past the auto-redirect feature of a site.

Thanks Doc. Funny enough, I noticed yesterday when this happened that when I went to my usual View – Go To, there were a couple of “extra” pages listed that I did not specifically go to…it was something like adclick.net. Maybe that’s the ad feature that you are referring to.

Edit – and thanks for the tip about the arrow beside the back button. Strange how I never even noticed it before! The things I learn when I visit here!

That is exactly what we meant – those entries are created by ads on the main page.

My old company’s website was like that – you entered the url, but as soon as you hit the site the code checked whether or not you had flash running and redirected you to the appropriate copy of the page, either using flash or not. The net result was that clicking on ‘back’ took you to the redirect page, which promptly redirected you again, according to flash or nonflash.

It wasn’t meant to trap anyone in their site or to be an annoyance, in fact just the opposite, but I have to admit it caused much more annoyance than anything else!
