Thanks, @Alex5723. I did not know that Avira was still around, let alone that they still support Windows 7.

In addition to Avira Free Security, Bitdefender Antivirus Free for Windows is also compatible with Windows 7

FWIW, here are Neil Rubenking’s takes on free anti-malware at PCMag (updated 17 June 2024):

Malwarebytes is also compatible with Windows 7, though the free version is on-demand only (there is a 14-day free trial of the Plus version, however). Still, it is useful for a second opinion on a potentially infected system.

        This is my opinion.
You get what you pay for. Anti-virus software is only part of a user’s total security needs. Does the free antimalware cover all those needs? Does it provide anti-phishing, zero day, heuristic real time analysis, or a VPN service? Does it provide all this protection with little hassle to the user? We protect the PC so we can use it and not spending time not using it just to protect it. How many different free anti-malware apps do you need to provide you total protection, and are there free anti-malware apps for all kinds of security threats?

Yes, I pay for my anti-malware software and yes I get all that above plus more in one security suite app. My cost for all this is $0.06 per PC per day. The creamer for my first cup of coffee each day costs more than the protection all my PCs for that day and I will drink more than one cup of coffee.

To me, the cost of my time to mess with free anti-malware apps (which I used to do) to get full security protection from all kinds of malware is way more than the cost of a good security software suite. The days where the only malware we worried about was a virus or Trojan which free anti-virus software can handle effectively are gone. In todays malware world virus and Trojan malware make up only a small part of the malware out there and antivirus software provides only small part of our security needs.

Good points. I’d like to throw in one further variable into the equation: the kind of use that the PC in question will be getting.

I participate in a distributed computing project, and some of my PCs go to the Web only and exclusively to report results on the project’s website; the browser is closed as soon as the report is submitted and new assignments are obtained.

These PCs don’t surf the Web, receive email, or play videos. For them, a full-featured security suite is overkill; I save my paid AV licenses for computers that will actually get mail or go wandering around the Web.

All that said, I do enjoy learning about cyber-protection applications and trying them out. 🙂  Over the years, Wilders Security has been invaluable in that regard.
