Hi Guys….. just downloaded but thankfully did not install updated version of AVG 8.5 free edition to discover it is corrupt. Has any one else encountered this same fault? Cheers SF.

AskWoody LoungerMarch 24, 2009 at 7:33 am #1153238I doubt if you would have been able to install it if it was corrupt, even if you wanted to. I’d try again in a few hours, chances are it got damaged during the download rather than the file itself is corrupt.
Hi Leif. I was unaware that an update was available but I received an email from a friend this morning in which he wrote & I quote: – [Have you been able to download the new AVG 8.5 issue? I went to the same web site that we used last time and my computer wasn’t happy with the source.] end quote …so I thought I would update from with AVG itself which it did successfully then informed me the 8.5 version was available, that was when I downloaded it to the desktop. I did think it rather strange that such a reputable prog. should be suspect, but there you go, will do as you suggest and see what tomorrow brings. It will be interesting to see if anyone else contacts the lounge with a similar problem. Thanks Leif SF.

AskWoody MVPMarch 24, 2009 at 8:43 am #1153258Very rare occurrences:
1.) a company will post a corrupted file to be downloaded.
2.) a file is corrupted when posted to a download site such as download.com or majorgeeks.com
3.) the corruption happens at the destination PC because of a disk problem.Usually, the corruption happens during the download process to the destination PC.

AskWoody PlusMarch 27, 2009 at 11:44 pm #1153911What I don’t like about AVG is that it doesn’t update the base version through regular updates (only updates the virus signatures).
When I look at current version of AVG Free installed, it is 8.0.238. But the latest free version is 8.5.285.
You have to periodically download the latest version, uninstall the older version manually and then reinstall the new version.

AskWoody LoungerMarch 28, 2009 at 1:57 pm #1153990I just checked my installation of AVG free and it is at build 285. This is not a fresh install of a recently downloaded application… it is an updated version. The application is obviously not updated as often as the signatures, but I do know that the application was updated this past week.

Hi guys, I keep reading posts to the effect that AVG is free, well this does not seem to harmonize with an email I just got from a friend yesterday. I copy it here for your comments: –
Hi, Dave
I downloaded, as I thought, AVG 8.5 following the prompt that came up on my screen. Now I have this email from Trialpay asking me to agree to this arrangement. Is it a con? The download, of course, did not work- it does not register anywhere. Alan X
NB As I indicated earlier, I did download the 285 version to my desktop some days ago but have not as yet installed it so have not experienced what my friend has explained above. Thanx SF.

AskWoody LoungerMarch 28, 2009 at 3:57 pm #1154000AVG Free is really free, but your friend may have downloaded the commercial (more extensive) version – the deal is that you get one program (in this case the commercial version of AVG) for free if you buy and pay at least one other piece of software via TrialPay.
The “really” free version is available from AVG Free but note the offer in the lower right corner:

Thanks a whole bunch Hans, I shall forward your appreciated information to my friend who I’m sure will be most grateful too and no doubt relieved. Kind Regards SF.
