I believe that it’s possible that today’s Avast VPS file (080626-0) may contain one or more false positives as it did back in post 710,702 in May. I did my usual morning re-boot on both my XP and Vista installations and got an Avast screaming alert that a virus has been found in sbautoupdate.exe which happens to be the updater program for keeping SpywareBlaster current. Since the file wasn’t flagged as bad earlier this morning with “yesterday’s” Avast file, I highly doubt that it got corrupted in those few minutes that I was reading from The Lounge.

As with the previous instance back in May, I’ll be keeping my eye on the Avast site for a manual update. Obviously, I don’t know if this Avast VPS will go nuts for anyone else.

Edited later to add: From the multiple posts on the Avast forum, it DOES look like another false positive. Someone also said other AV programs are doing the same thing, so keep an eye open.

Thanks, Big Al. According to this site, Avast has a record of “many” false positives. Makes me think about switching to AntiVir PE Premium.

I got a 404 File not Found error when I tried your link.

Edited to add – the page I ended up on said that only links to their main site are allowed. In which case to find the report you cite, go to http://www.av-comparatives.org/%5B/url%5D then click on the Comparatives button, then scroll down to May 2008 (number 18 in the list).

Curious. The link takes me directly to the table.

It could be because of cookies, Dennis, for I get the same 404 he got when I try your link.

Very strange. I’ve just tried again, and it still doesn’t take me to it.

That table says they tested the Avast Pro version, which “shouldn’t” have made any difference. Funny thing is that I’ve been on Avast for (I think) almost two years, since I got this computer and haven’t had ANY false positives until the TWO here lately within a short period of time. I think I’ll hang in there with ’em for awhile longer and be an ardent observer. grin
