Hi, I run a windows7 PC 64 bit. Im thinking of changing my AV software to AVIRA Free Antivirus. Right now I have MSE. Would this be a good change and if so , how easy is it to uninstall MSE which I have had for the last year.
Thanks.

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

A full uninstall of any A/V is not always straightforward, anything left behind could cause issues like BSODs in future, a list of removal tools etc. here: http://www.carrona.org/avuninst.html
I prefer Avast! free, but choose whatever gives you a decent level of protection with easily accessible controls.
I used Avast free for several years and went to Pro a few months ago for some extra option. Was happy with the Free but I think if I really like a product I should donate something to the company. The reason I chose Avast was several professional AV test companies one suggested on Windows Secrets gave it high marks that covered most holes a lot of the better known paid products had not closed.

Nice resource but check back in 12 months and the list could look completely different. As an example, one of the anti malware programs i see most frequently disparaged is Norton which gets high ratings here. My take is that most of the programs listed do an adequate job (including MSE). Its also important to be careful what you click on…..

Seriously, Jerry? They rate MSE 1.5 out of 6.0, probably because of a 71% detection of zero day malware and 92% of a set of representative malware of the last 2-3 months. That looks pretty lame to me.
Yes there are better ones but 71% catches most of them and 92 % is pretty high for the recently released baddies.. I didn’t say it was great but adequate. As I said, 12 months from now things could change radically. I’m not up to chasing the current top AV app each month. MSE and Malwarebytes has served me well over the years and I don’t see any reason to change. YMMV.
