    Auto update installed:
Cumulative Security Update for IE 6 SP 1 (KB832894) 40 times since April 5
    and
Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 SP 1 (KB837009) and
Security Update for Windows XP (KB828741) 37 times each since April 15.

In addition to the auto updates on these patches, I went to the website twice (including today) and ran the update utility. Each time, I accepted installation of these three patches.

Finally, the following patches installed once each:
Security Update for Windows XP (KB837001) on April 15,
Security Update for Windows XP (KB840374) on May 12, and
Security Update for DirectX 9.0 (KB839643) on June 10.

Why do some patches reinstall themselves and how can I get them to stop?

Is this list of six patches complete for the period since April 5?

    Thanks for your help!

You can check which updates have been released here. From a quick scan I just did, it looks like you’re missing one update (835732, released in April). One of the updates you list was released in February (832894).

As for repeated installs of the same update, can you try disabling automatic update, rebooting, and then re-enabling the service?

You can try going to C:WindowsSystem32 and deleting the CAATROOT2 folder (NOT catroot). Then retry windows update.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I’m finally got time to follow up on your suggestions, but I’m not done yet. Several suggestions led to algorithms that called for turning off security and turning on ActiveX to make updates work. That raised another question for me, that I asked in post 391695.

Thanks again. I appreciate your useful, detailed suggestions.
