Sure this will have come up before – is the search faciclity ever coming back? Anyway, can anyone tell me what the security implications of Autopreview are? I want to dissuade network users from using the preview pane, for obvious reasons, but wondered if there might be an option short of just listing mail by subject line.

All incoming mail is scanned by Sophos, executable attachments and vbs are blocked, so nasty surprises should be a limited risk at worst. Users may be fooled into opening mail with a tempting subject line, so there is a risk even with the preview pane turned off; but with the first lines of a message visible, junk should be easier to recognise and delete without opening. It’s always a bit of a trade off. Any opinions as to where the greater risk lies?

Personally, I prefer to see as many messages as possible, but from what I can tell, AutoPreview does not activate the HTML code when it displays its little preview. Also, it presumably (haven’t tested) doesn’t return a Read Receipt. For these reasons, enabling AutoPreview involves less potentially harmful “communication” than does opening a message.

I agree with Jererson, but if you have your other requirements (anti virus, firewall and patches ) in place you will have no need in not using preview.
Now with 2003, you have the option to not display the linked images and/or code, which makes it safer yet.
