I’m currently having a few problems with an Autonumber field. Things are fine until I compact the database, then it resets back to 0. This is betting to be quite a problem because the database is expanding rapidly !!!
Anyone got a fix ?? Apart from resetting the autonumber field every time ??? help

Are you deleting all the records in the table? And, what version of Access are you using? If A2000, make sure you have the SR-1 update.

        Hi Mark

        Version is A97
The Database if a donation logging system for a charity.
Whats happening is the donations are being entered into a table with the Autonumber field, when the “Day” is complete they are appended to the main Donations table and the “Day” table cleared out.

…and then you’re doing a nightly repair and compact on the db, right?

Yes…. but they are comapcting weekly..

Q #1: Why is it necessary to have that separate daily table?

Q #2: Is it necessary to carry-over the same ID number from the daily file to the main file when it gets posted there? (that is, why not have an autonumber field there?)

Yes, if you have an empty table containing an autonumber field, then the autonumber will be reset when you compact the database (that’s occasionally a useful feature).

Also, since you mention tracking donations, BEWARE of using autonumbers if that field is to be in any way “official” (e.g. as an identifier for a tax receipt). If you delete a record you’ll leave a gap in the numbering which could concern anyone looking at your records (i.e. “What happened to receipt 1534?”)
