Has Microsoft changed the way automatic updates are notified? In the past I used to get a yellow shield in the notification area. Now the only notification I get is when I close the system, usually to attend some other task, but I am delayed for up to 30 minutes on shutdown to install the updates.

The Automatic Updates (Control Panel) is set to Automatic and has never intentionally been changed.

Compliments of the season to all

Is this a work PC? That is the behavior when using either SMS or WSUS so the user will get updates delivered but not applied until shutdown. I’m sure that if you have AU set Automatic it downloads and installs critical updates when they are available. The only time you see the yellow shield is if you say download and notify me.

Thank you for the reply, I have changed the setting to “Notify” and see what happens after the next update. I am sure it has always been set to automatic.

To answer your question, it is not a work computer. I am too old to be playing with them. I remember when the release of DOS 3.0 created more ado than Vista is at the moment, and boy! wasn’t 3.3 the total thing?

Have you manually run Microsoft Updates, to see what all there is for updates?

You may have a lot of them and they are all trying to be installed since you have given the system permission to do the updates.

All updates are installed, even when Belarc is run there is a complete list of successfully installed.

What is annoying is, I have a dual chamber pacemaker and suddenly become very tired. I go to shut down the system and am met by the advice that there are updates to be installed. Previously, there used to be a “yellow shield” in the notification area. That no longer appears.

There is “to my knowledge” nothing wrong with the system, somewhere along the line this function has been disabled.

              I run Vet antivirus daily
              Microsoft Defender daily
Pest Patrol resident and complete scan weekly
              Lavasoft AdAware complete scan weekly
              AdsGone resident
              CW Shredder weekly
              SpyBot weekly

I get normal rubbish that bypasses the above, as soon as they are detected they are deleted. I hesitate to say (write) it the daily scan takes 2 hours and nothing has ever been detected, about once a month an e-mail gets detected and is automatically deleted.

The problem I am experiencing is that I only make one adjustment at a time, Microsoft don’t oblige (contrary to popular opinion I guess) I have to wait until the next update to see the result of my endeavors.

              Merry Christmas to all.

              Turn off automatic updates completely.

Go to the Windows Update site, not the Microsoft Update site and download anything pending, one update at a time.

I had Microsoft Updates allowed and it took forever just to scan my system to see if anything need to be updated. Used just Windows update and all was well with the world again.

This suggestion (post 621801) worked this morning, 5 updates notified in the notification area.

              Thanks to all
