Does anyone know of a Registry setting that will stop Windows XP from regularly prompting the user to switch Austomatic Updates back on again, after it has been turned off?

Where do you see that? Can you post a screen shot? I’ve got automatic updates turned off on several machines and never see a prompt. I see messages in Windows Update, MBSA, MSAS but nothing trying to coerce me into turning it on.

Thanks for the prompt response Joe.

The Security Shield in the SysTray is red with a white cross on it and a baloon pops up with the message to turn Automatic Updates on again. Also, the version of XP should read SP1 not SP2.

The security shield is part of ‘Security Center’ which was released with SP-2. If you right click ‘My Computer’ and select ‘Properties’ you should see the service pack level. You can change how the security center handles automatic updates by opening the security center applet. In the panel on the left click on the ‘Change the way Security Center alerts me’ link. Then uncheck the Automatic Updates entry. ‘OK’ your way out.
