Automatic Thunderbird upgrade to version 78.x has started

Users of the desktop email client Thunderbird who are still running version 68.x of the program will be upgraded to Thunderbird 78.2.2 automatically. The development team of the email client put an update blocker in place to prevent automatic upgrades from Thunderbird 68.x to Thunderbird 78 after the initial release of the new version. One of the main reasons for putting the update block in place was that the extension system changed in Thunderbird 78….

And on cue, I have been upgraded from 68.12 to 78.2.2.

New look, slightly smaller font to get more stuff on the screen, much the same apart from that.

And 78 has done away with x-notes – I frequently used it to add notes to emails. Any options anyone knows of would be appreciated. Thanks.

It might be a good idea to disable the automatic update for awhile, I do not like that the legacy add-ons no longer work. It may take awhile for developers to upgrade the add-on extensions.

Based on past experience, I recommend most people wait until at least version 78.4 to update. Let somebody else discover all of the bugs, and give them time to port more add-ons. Let somebody else discover all of the bugs, = Good Advice, where have we heard that type of warning before? oh yeah, hear at AskWoody !
Follow ghacks instructions to go to Options / Advanced / Update and uncheck Automatically install updates, choose instead – Check but let me choose … (Like good old Windows 7).

Hopefully others will post here if it is safe to download update, or discuss if we should wait for version 78.4 ? I am staying on 68.12.0 for awhile.
