Could you please tell me how to change my default calculation from manual to automatic. I tried changing the setting in tools > options > calculate > automatic and by right clicking on the sheet tab > properties > view code and changing enablecalulation to true; however, neither of these settings hold when I close excel.

    Thank you.

The most likely reason is that when you reopen Excel, a workbook is being opened which has it’s calc settings set to manual. This resets the Excel default. Review all WB’s that open on Excel startup, including any hidden ones such as Personal.xls. To unhide WB’s, select Window | Unhide. If this doesn’t help, post back.

I cannot locate a personal.xl* file on my hard drive and I have selected view hidden files. When I select Windows > Unhide on my default worksheet, the option is greyed out.

OK, you don’t have a personal.xls (see note). Do you have any *.XL? files in your XLSTART folder? If so examine the calculation settings in them all. Under Tools | Options | General, is Alternate Startup Folder blank, or is there a folder location? If there is a folder location, examine the calculation settings in all *.XL? files in that folder.

(Note: if the option is grayed out, you don’t have any hidden workbooks. However, a WB that is hidden in Excel is not necessarily a Hidden File.)

Look for a Book.xlt or Sheet.xlt (or any other files) in your XLStart directory.

Try recording a simple macro to the personal macros sheet, then close Excel and answer yes to the “save personal macro shet” message. It will create the personal.xls workbook, and then you can unhide it and change the default setting. Sometimes making a default “book.xlt” workbook template and putting this in xlstartup is easier to control defaults (see other posts).
