Is it possible to install a “spam” filter for posts and topic titles that wouldn’t permit certain words shown in the forum, but instead automatically replace the words with a number of stars?

      We unabashedly bowdlerize posts.

My nine-year-old looks at the site. That’s my gold standard.

      There’s nothing automatic about it.

As only one moderator on AskWoody, I can tell you that every post is looked at for anything offensive. I personally will not trash a post for an unacceptable word or words, be they an acronym or full spelling. I will change a specific word to something that is allowed. My thinking is the writer will see the change and note it for future reference. I may or may not leave a moderator note, it depends on the severity whether or not to refer poster to the Lounge Rules or delete the entire post. I speak for myself, but I think the other mods agree.

I resist censorship, but decorum on AskWoody is a must, and I agree with it.

btw, a lot of  ***  are added by the poster, not mods.

I wasn’t suggesting star the entire post, just automatically star the offensive words.

Autocensoring is tricky. I could tell stories…

Like the time on JOTI IRC, leaders-only channel… (Scouts, Jamboree On The Internet)… discussion on where the various scout groups were from and what kind of facilities they’d usually meet in, and folks would get autokicked apparently at random.

Turns out that various international place names had substrings that tripped the nasty-word filters… and that commonly used architectural vocabulary also had such substrings.

I thought it was filtered automatically, but now I know somebody manually cleaned my language up in a post. I didn’t see any notation that a moderator had touched it, though. Thank you for replacing my phrase with “messed up”; I used a harsher euphemism that wasn’t explicit. But as @Woody says, his 9-year old reads these. I know better now!

Bought a refurbished Windows 10 64-bit, currently updated to 22H2. Have broke the AC adapter cord going to the 8.1 machine, but before that, coaxed it into charging. Need to buy new adapter if wish to continue using it.
