OK I have loaded End It All and I love it so much I want to put it in my Task Scheduler. But when I put a short cut there it doesn’t run. You have to click on the execute button in the End It All program. I have read all the threads here with any variant spelling I could find nothing about making it run automatically. I know there must be a place to add the command line so that the short cut will work automatically. Can a command be added to the program execute line in the shortcut window? IF so what? Or is it necessary to [gasp shudder] edit some reg or ini file?

I haven’t got the answer for you, but my curiosity is killing me! I tried EndItAll a couple of years ago and haven’t used it ever since. Why do you want to SCHEDULE a program that will shutdown your PC?

Hi Al:
EndItAll doesn’t shut down your PC. It shuts down programs that are running, excluding itself, systray, & Explorer (I think). However, I’m curious as to why you’d want to shut programs off automatically at a certain time. I’d just click it when I leave the computer, FWIW.

I want EndItAll to close everything so that the computer can do a scan and defrag in the middle of the night while I am peacefully sleeping. But there are programs that EndIt has to ask about so I guess I will just have to remember to run it before I leave. At my age I can use all the automated memory helps I can find.

A little off topic, but you might want to work this into your defrag routine if you are on win 98 (dont know if this works in other versions). Lets the defrag proceed with minimal other things running on your system to interrupt the process.

To begin, access the ToolsMtsutil folder on your Windows 98 CD-ROM. Then, locate and right-click the Defrag.inf file and select the Install command from the shortcut menu. When you do, the install operation adds the special command, Defrag /All to the RunServicesOnce key in the Registry. Now, restart Windows 98. When you do, Disk Defragmenter will run before anything else loads from the registry, the StartUp folder or the Win.ini file. It will then be able to complete the defragmentation operation uninterrupted.

If you’d like to be able to defragment your hard drive regularly using this technique, you can copy the Defrag.inf file to a folder on your hard drive. That way you can access it quickly and easily the next time you want to perform a defragmentation operation.

What I do in that situation is just reboot. I have my system set up so that NOTHING loads at startup except what is absolutely essential. I don’t even automatically load my antivirus. The task manager then runs whatever is set to run with no interference.

Dave’s suggestion is an excellent one, & I was using it until I started using DiskKeeper Lite. Because I’m using the Lite version, I can’t automate it. You could get the full version.

You can download the full version of Diskeeper 7.0 as 30-day trial-ware. You can 1) Set it to run in real time and never have to defrag–the key, and there have been some long threads on it recently on the XP part of the lounge, is to have around 30% of your drive that you want to defrag free–and I have learned it makes a difference by stuffing my C drive and then cleaning it to 30% free. The defrag is much faster if I do it manually. You can also defrag your master file table on boot which you cannot do with XP’s intrinsic Exec Soft defragger, and the Page File which you can do with XP’s but not as well.

2) You can specify it to run every day at hours when you are going to be asleep. I am inclined to close all programs, disconnect from my cable modem, and turnoff my antivirus because the Diskeeper people have advised me and literature I surfed for has. But even if you don’t, and have programs running, it will defrag you fine at the time when you set and be out of your way so you don’t have to see it.

And I think you’ll see a performance difference if you use at least some version of Diskeeper besides the defragger XP comes with–and I like it a quantum leap better than Norton Speed Disk in Norton System Works. Symantec was making the Defragger for MS up through 2000 and then they switched to Exec Soft.

Encouraging you to try Diskeeper Lite that Phil uses, or Diskeeper 7.0, that has really helped my system, I appreciate learning the tips that Dave just taught me on defragging.

Thanks for the info to all on this topic – I often have problems when using system tasks, I get a reading that there is something still running that has caused the “scheduled” task to begin 10 times without successful completion. Even though I have shut down everything I can think of, this still happens, so Ill try the ideas listed and see if I get better results. Just wanted to thank everyone for their information, always lots of helpful stuff in this place.
