Is there a relatively easy way to backup a database once a week – without anyone having to do it by going to Tools > Database Utilities > Back Up Database? i.e. say from the Autoexec macro?

It usually isn’t a good idea to do something like that automatically on opening the database. If you happen to open it to do some necessary work and your “automagic” operation starts running without so much as a “may I”, it can cause problems, emotional if not database related.

You have several options for doing backups, though as Charlotte notes, doing them automatically requires some caution. First, there is a commercial utility from FMS called Total Agent that does a number of administrative tasks, including backups. Second, you can write some code to do backups from another database – the thread beginning with post 392304 deals with this issue. Finally, you can use a file backup utility program to make scheduled backups, as Access .MDB files aren’t normally locked – I like a program called Second Copy.

Thanks to you both, I sort of expected this type of a response – but I had to ask. I was just hoping that there was an easy way to insure that there was another copy of the database that was not too old squirrled away in another place. Thanks for your pointers on doing things without some sort of notification to the users.
