AutoIt v3 is a freeware BASIC-like scripting language designed for automating the Windows GUI and general scripting. It uses a combination of simulated keystrokes, mouse movement and window/control manipulation in order to automate tasks in a way not possible or reliable with other languages (e.g. VBScript and SendKeys). AutoIt is also very small, self-contained and will run on 95, 98, ME, NT4, 2000, XP, 2003 out of the box with no annoying “runtimes” required! You can even make compiled executable scripts that can run without AutoIt being installed! …

I mention this update of this well established program, because it represents a major rewrite. In particular, it allows the scripter to design their own GUI,

AutoIt is a very nice program, Alan, and I’ve been using it for a couple of years thanks to a suggestion from TimOz. Loungers who search will find it mentioned in the past but I’ve always been surprised that it doesn’t get more attention than it does. The last post I remember seeing about version 3 was about a year ago when it was in beta, I think. Well worth the checkout…

If you give me your e-mail address, I’m sure I could arrange to automate a whole heap of ** Spam post – please alert a Moderator **-related stuff, at least a hundred fold! evilgrin

You mention ** Spam post – please alert a Moderator ** and of course, that subject lands in my Inbox with a frequency I’d rather do without. I send them to my junk list in Outlook and then I used to open the list and remove the prefix from the email sender’s address so they won’t catch me out with a slight change.
Any way, to get to the point, I now have an autoit script that does that for me – and loads of other useful little scripts too.
It’s just about the best piece of software I’ve got – and it’s free!
            Everyone should have one.

That sounds like a great use of the program Peter. Maybe you could share your useful scripts here in this thread, as well as anybody else who’s come up with any “gems”. I’ve seen some on the support website(s), but there must be a host of possibilities that haven’t been publicized.

              Hi Alan
Here’s the code for my “JunkTidy” script. Unless it’s compiled it will only work with Autoit V 3 on your system. For any one interested, I’ve renamed it as a txt file but to use it the suffix should, of course, be “*.au3”

I also use Autoit with Zipgenius for backups, as ZipGenius has a very flexible command line capability and menus for program launchers to save clutter on desktop.

Thanks Peter. Interesting script. Maybe well suited to a scheduled, routine maintenance/ cleanup task.

Also interesting that you use it with ZipGenius. I use the latter myself, but haven’t had a need to delve into its commandline mode.

              Alan
